How much will it cost to gain a PPL?
It will cost on average between £5,000 - £6,000 but this figure is entirely dependant on your ability.
How long will it take?
This is dependant on how regularly you fly, but generally, if you fly twice a week it would take you around a year.
Are there any age restrictions?
No, but you must be over 14 before you can log your flying time towards your licence. You must be over 16 before you can go solo, and you must be over 17 years old to hold a PPL licence. There is no maximum age for the PPL though you must be able to hold a valid medical.
What are the medical requirements?
You must pass a CAA JAR Class 2 medical to qualify for a PPL Licence, you can fly with spectacles. You can fly without a medical but you must have a valid medical certificate before you can go solo. We do recommend that you have a medical shortly after beginning your training.
What qualifications do I need?
You do not need any academic qualifications to qualify for a PPL. You will however, have to sit examinations, some of which require simple mathematical calculations.
How many exams do I have to sit?
You will have to sit 7 multiple choice examinations, there are Aviation Law, Meteorology, Navigation, Aircraft General, Human Performance, Flight Planning & Performance, and Radiotelephony.
What equipment do I need?
For your first lesson you do not require anything. After your first flight if you are sure you wish to continue your flight training and gain your PPL Licence, then initially you will require a logbook, aircraft checklist, a fuel tester and Training Manual 1. Your instructor will advise you when you need to purchase further equipment as you progress through the course. Do I need to have any special clothing?
No, you do not need any special clothing, we recommend that you wear clothing that you feel comfortable in.
How many hours will it take to get my PPL?
Its a minimum of 45 hours to qualify for a PPL. An average student will take around 55 to 60 hours.
